EVENTS

The photograph above was taken at the 9th Polar à la Plage festival in Le Havre. The tent, in which the 24 authors were signing, was on the beach. So naturally since it was June we had lashing rain and howling winds all weekend and at one point the marquee nearly took off back across the Chanel, but amazingly it didn't seem to daunt the French readers who flocked in. A very hardy bunch who take their fiction extremely seriously. The French hospitality was, as you would expect, amazing. Not a plate of curling sandwiches in sight. Every lunch and dinner, taken in different restaurants and cafés through out town, was a three course feast with enough wine to keep the authors in very high spirits.
At the Le Havre festival they hire one of the beautifully decorated city buses, and during the festival pairs of authors take it in turns to go and sit on the bus and the readers all pile on to hear them talk about their books and their research. I had the huge privilege of sharing my talk and bus seat with the famous French author and political activist Roger Martin, who is shown in the photo talking about his book set in Le Havre based on a true story about the time when Afro-American soldiers were camped in the forest out Le Havre during the war and the dreadful discrimination they suffered in the American army.
